Announcing our November Book
Dear Big City Book Club Member, This year marks the 40th anniversary of New York City’s dramatic 1977 blackout — a moment that was pivotal in the city’s history. Taking that as our cue, the Book Club’s next book will be the much-acclaimed chronicle of the period, Jonathan Mahler’s “Ladies and Gentlemen, the Bronx Is Burning: 1977, Baseball, Politics, and the Battle for the Soul of a City.” On the evening of Thursday, Nov. 9, Mr. Mahler, a staff writer for The New York Times Magazine, will be joining us for a discussion of the book, which will take place both live and online (venue and time to be announced). Join us any way you can for a talk about the Yankees, serial killers and the larger-than-life characters that shaped the city. Start reading, Ginia Bellafante
A City Gripped by Crisis and Enraptured by the Yankees
Mr. Mahler weaves several stories into one grand narrative of the city's death and rebirth. Baseball and politics carry most of the weight. About a third of the book is devoted to the New York Yankees and their quest for lost glory under the volatile Billy Martin, hired as manager by the team's new owner, George Steinbrenner.
